Synopsis

Young Gibraltarian Tony joins his Moroccan friend Tariq for a spur-of-the-moment weekend in Tangiers and Asilah. There Tony experiences warm, rustic Moroccan hospitality, local customs, seaside life and close friendship—swimming in hidden freshwater pools, sharing hookah and wedding celebrations. The visit darkens when Abdul, Tariq's father, is murdered by a gang of smugglers. Tony witnesses Tariq's grief and the funeral rites that follow, then returns to Gibraltar haunted but changed.

Back in London, Tony—now eighteen—meets Susan at a party and they fall into a swift, intense romance. Their love blossoms through shared music, long conversations, romantic getaways and a whirlwind engagement. Susan's Jewish background and her parents' disapproval about Tony being non-Jewish complicate matters, but they marry and honeymoon in Gibraltar.

Seeking purpose together, they emigrate to Israel and live briefly on a kibbutz. When the Yom Kippur War erupts, Tony serves in the medical and ambulance service and is captured behind enemy lines after his vehicle is disabled.
